8th arrondissement of Paris
The 8th arrondissement of Paris is one of the 20 arrondissements (administrative districts) of the capital city of France.
Situated on the right bank of the River Seine and centred on the Opéra, the 8th is, together with the 1st and 9th arrondissements and 16th arrondissement and 17th arrondissement, one of Paris's main business districts. According to the 1999 census, it was the place of employment of more people than any other single arrondissement of the capital. It is also the location of many places of interest, among them the Champs-Élysées, the Arc de Triomphe and the Place de la Concorde, as well as the Élysée Palace, official residence of the President of France.
Geography
The land area of the arrondissement is 3.881 km2 (1.498 sq. miles, or 959 acres).
Demographics
The peak of population of the 8th arrondissement occurred in 1891, when it had 107,485 inhabitants. Since then, the arrondissement has widely attracted businesses, and has become less of a residential area. In 1999, the population was only 39,314, while the arrondissment contained 171,444 jobs.

¹This group is made up largely of pieds-noirs from Northwest Africa, followed by former colonial citizens who had French citizenship at birth (such as was often the case for the native elite in French colonies), and to a lesser extent foreign-born children of French expatriates. Note that a foreign country is understood as a country not part of France as of 1999, so a person born for example in 1950 in Algeria, when Algeria was an integral part of France, is nonetheless listed as a person born in a foreign country in French statistics.
²An immigrant is a person born in a foreign country not having French citizenship at birth. Note that an immigrant may have acquired French citizenship since moving to France, but is still considered an immigrant in French statistics. On the other hand, persons born in France with foreign citizenship (the children of immigrants) are not listed as immigrants. |

The head offices of AXA,[1] Bouygues,[2] Électricité de France (EDF),[3] Eurazeo,[4] GDF Suez,[5] HSBC France,[6] and Suez Environnement are located in this arrondissement.[7] Standard & Poor's' France office is located in the 8th arrondissement.[8]
At one time the head office of Union des Transports Aériens was located in this arrondissement.[9] The predecessor airline Union Aéromaritime de Transport also had its head office in the 8th arrondissement.[10] When Suez existed, its head office was in the 8th arrondissement.[11] When Unibail existed, its head office was in the arrondissement.[12] At one time Groupe Danone had its head office in the 8th arrondissement.[13] At one time Alcatel-Lucent's head office was located in the arrondissement.[14][15]
